Tyco Team Conquers Northern Territory Tank

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Interesting logistics skills were required as part of the upgrade of water supply infrastructure to a remote Northern Territory community (Australia).

The project undertaken by Water Dynamics and Tyco Pumping Systems' Tank Division, involved the supply and installation of a 1.8 million litre water storage tank and 6kms of DN250 PVC pipeline on one of the Territories island communities.

With the 1.8Ml Southern Cross Squatter Tank for the project weighing in at 46,000kg, the logistics of transporting it from manufacture in Withcott, South East Queensland to this remote site was a challenge the Tyco team were up for.

The Southern Cross tank required two forty foot trailers to accommodate it for the road trip to Darwin. Once in Darwin the two trailers and two prime movers had to be loaded onto a seagoing barge for the 12 hour steaming to site. Upon arrival to the island, makeshift landings needed to be prepared to enable the safe unloading of both vehicles and cargo.

Projects of this nature are ideally suited to the modular design of the Southern Cross Squatter Tank. The unique modular design coupled with the extensive engineering and factory fabrication process enables the Southern Cross Squatter tank to be installed in these remote locations.

Nick Day of Water Dynamics – Darwin advised "the delivery of the Southern Cross Tank was a critical item in the overall project schedule. In co-operation with the team at Tyco Pumping Systems' Tank Division, Water Dynamics Darwin had the product manufactured and delivered ahead of schedule and without incident. Our installation team received ongoing support during the erection process from the Engineered Tanks team including a site visit from the Tank Product Manager. The collective effort by Tyco resulted in this project being completed ahead of the scheduled Practical Completion date and in line with our budget expectation"
